Benefits of Home Visits

home visit kitsHome visits are a powerful and proactive approach to fostering meaningful connections between teachers and parents. These visits involve teachers taking the time to visit students' homes, where they can interact with parents or guardians in a comfortable, familiar setting. The primary goal of home visits is to build relationships, provide support, and bridge the gap between the academic and family aspects of a student's life. There are several significant benefits to implementing home visits as part of a school's family engagement strategy.

These home visits can facilitate stronger relationships between teachers and parents. When educators enter the home, they gain a deeper understanding of the family's unique dynamics, cultural background, and community as a whole. This insight allows teachers to tailor their approach to meet the specific needs of the student, making the educational experience more personalized. It also helps in breaking down potential barriers and misunderstandings that might exist between teachers and parents, leading to better communication and collaboration.

In a recent study at Stanton Elementary School in Washington, DC, parents provided helpful feedback on their home visits. Before the visits, manny parents were guarded or defensive, and not open to listening. After the visits, they were much more open to communication. They also had the perspective that home visits were always negative in the past, viewing it more as a check up or a CPS visit. By showing parents that these visits are a positive interaction, educators can make more of an impact. Teachers can also change their perceptions of parents after home visits, as they understand it is not that they don't care about their childs' education, rather they did not know how to be more involded, and lacked the specific knowledge for the academics.

Home visits also enhance parental involvement in their child's education. Many parents, especially those who may feel disconnected from the school environment, often find it easier to engage when teachers reach out to them in their homes. This increased engagement can lead to more active participation in school activities, homework support, and a greater awareness of their child's academic progress. In turn, students benefit from this increased support and encouragement, which can lead to improved academic performance and overall well-being.

Furthermore, home visits can help identify and address various challenges that students and their families might be facing. This includes recognizing potential socio-economic issues, health concerns, or other factors that can affect a student's ability to learn. By identifying these challenges early, teachers and schools can connect families with appropriate resources and support services, thereby creating a more nurturing and conducive learning environment.

By prioritizing home visits as part of their family engagement strategy, schools can create a more inclusive and supportive educational community that benefits everyone involved.

Benefits of Home & School Collaboration

family engagementFamily engagement is a true collaboration between educators and families to support students' well-being and success. Some schools have seen a decrease in family engagement with the rise of the parents' rights movement which has resulted in strained or even severed relationships between the family and the school. This is why it is now more important than ever to mend these relationships so that students can experience greater success. There are so many benefits for students when there is a true collaboration between the home and the school.

There are so many benefits for students when there is a true collaboration between the home and the school

1) Attendance improves - Research demonstrates that when students and families have a true partnership, student truancy, absenteeism, and behavior issues decrease because students are more motivated to come to school and participate in class.

2) Achievement increases - Students have higher grades and do better on assignments when there is a school / home connection.

3) Promotes student self-esteem - When parents are engaged and supportive of their child's learning, the child feels comfortable trying new things and does not fear making mistakes.  This impacts students' self-efficacy and increases self-confidence.

4) Strengthens literacy skills - When parents are equipped with meaningful activities to do at home to support their child's literacy development, students' experience greater gains in reading achievement, language comprehension, and interest in reading (Roberts, Jurgens, & Burchinal, M., 2005).
